We’re On Top of Recent Tax Notice Confusion

September 2, 2025

At Faw Casson, we know that opening your mail to find a tax notice you weren’t expecting can cause your heart to skip a beat. Especially when you’re confident you’ve already filed and paid correctly. Recently, we’ve seen an uptick in erroneous notices and instances where Delaware, Maryland, and surrounding states have made adjustments to filed tax returns without sending advance notification.

Many of these instances are due to innocuous things such as system updates, changes in data processing, or backlog cleanup, but the end result can still leave taxpayers scratching their heads.

The good news? We’re already aware of the trend and monitoring it closely.

Our team is keeping a close eye on the situation so we can respond quickly if it affects you. If a notice lands in your mailbox, we can help you determine whether it’s legitimate, an error, or something that can be easily corrected. In some cases, it’s simply a matter of providing additional documentation or clarifying figures.

This is nothing new for us. Staying ahead of developments like this is part of our DNA. It’s why we proactively keep track of changes at the federal and state levels, so our clients aren’t caught off guard.

If you receive an unexpected notice or find out a state has altered your return without notifying you, don’t panic and don’t pay anything without checking with us first. Please reach out to your Faw Casson advisor with any questions or concerns about notifications that come in.
