The IRS is reporting a new wave of phone calls where the caller is misrepresenting themselves as IRS agents attempting to collect personal information from taxpayers. While they sound very official, stating their name, badge number, and other information to make themselves seem credible, they are not. The callers have also been reported as threatening things such as tax refunds not being processed without the taxpayer providing information over the phone.
The IRS will never initiate contact with taxpayers via telephone or email. Official IRS communication with arrive in the USPS.
